Supply-Chain Coordination and Management Strategies

Introduction

Even as supply chains go global, one can not forget the timeless principle of proximity to suppliers and importance of time-to-market, especially for short life cycle products. This point is brought home when we look at the example of Sony Digital Camera manufacturing, and learn how important it is to choose the right supply chain for our products, not just initially but at various stages of its life-cycle.

Course Objectives

This objective of this workshop is to familiarize the participants with the current issues in supply-chain management. Starting with a common understanding of SCM, the participants are exposed to contemporary strategies being adopted by companies to streamline and better manage their supply chains. During the workshop, the participants would get a chance to experience the supply chain dynamics first-hand (by playing the Beer Game) that causes much of the problems in the supply chains.

The participants would also come to appreciate the role of visibility and collaboration in their supply chains, mainly to counter the effects of supply chain dynamics. Innovative strategies such as postponement and vendor-managed inventory are discussed along with examples of companies employing them.

Among the emerging trends, we discuss the role of supply chain orchestrators who enable customer companies to leverage on their supplier networks and play the role of virtual manufacturers.
